Did you know that only 45% of people make New Year’s resolutions? Did you also know that you are 10 times more likely to accomplish something if you set a goal to do it? Set a goal to be a happier, healthier you for 2014! Health management is the key to becoming more mentally and physically fit.

When people think of health management, it seems like a dreadful, boring task. One that they will undertake because they know they should, not because they see the light at the end of the tunnel. But once you commit to the tunnel, you will see the light! You will start to feel better emotionally and be able to accomplish more physically. Some of us are at the beginning of the tunnel and some of us are halfway through. Wherever you are, there is always more you can do.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physically active persons:

  • Have lower rates of: coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and depression;
  • Have a lower risk of falling and of hip or vertebral fractures; and
  • Are more likely to maintain their weight.
  • To start your health management program, decide what areas you want to work on. Start by setting one or two attainable goals, such as tracking every calorie you consume for a week, walking 10,000 steps per day, attending a yoga class. There are apps that will help you track calories, track physical exercise, track the number of steps you take. Find something that helps you reach your goals.

Once you have accomplished that first goal, set another one. Take baby steps toward each goal, make them attainable. Before you know it, you will be skipping towards the end of that tunnel, happy to be a healthier you.
