Very often you hear people complain about migraine headaches and you think they are just being overly dramatic. Maybe they just have a regular headache. So what is the difference between a simple headache and a migraine and what can you do when your head starts hurting?

First of all, headaches can be caused by many different factors: lack of sleep, lack of water, stress, prolonged exposure to loud noises, caffeine withdrawal, jaw clenching, hormones, kinks and cricks in your neck and back, and several other issues. Many times headaches can be remedied simply by getting more sleep, drinking more water, exercising, regular adjustments, and eating right.

But there are those headaches that aren’t easily fixed, the kind that can be debilitating to the point that you just want to find a dark room to lie down in and not come out until it is gone. That is a migraine. Those aren’t as easy to remedy. Those might require special medication. A migraine headache can cause intense throbbing or pulsing in one area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

A regular headache can be very painful but isn’t accompanied by any of those symptoms. You may be able to treat a regular headache with a drink of water and a nap. Or even a dose of pain reliever. Or even a visit to your favorite chiropractor, Dr. Hirst. Many of the issues that cause headaches can be relieved if not cured by getting an adjustment and a massage.
